And now for something completely different!
Where Peter tries his hand at making a small travel video
Trying new things is at the core of this blog, so it only makes sense that I try to make the leap from writing to video. I’ve done a few home videos in the past, but I have to admit it has been about a decade or more since my last editing effort. Fortunately, the tech had gotten simpler not harder, so this morning I present to you my first vlog.
I start in Bourrassol, the neighbourhood where my current Airbnb is located on the rive gauche of la rivière Garonne, across from Old Toulouse. We cycle across the Pont St-Pierre, which is exclusively pedestrian and cyclist for much of the year, then visit two of Toulouse’s best known squares, Place St-Pierre and Place de la Daurade, the city’s main ports back in the day. From there we visit the Couvent des Jacobins, a 13th-century Dominican church that underwent numerous transitions through the ages and was only recently restored, beginning in 1905, to some of its earlier glory.
The next leg of our 20-minute video takes us to the Canal de Brienne, which connects to the famous Canal du Midi. My regular readers will known I’ve become quite fascinated with the past and present of the Canal du Midi, but today’s visit is just a peaceful bike ride along the canal with a surprise ending at the Matabiau train station.
Since I am re-learning the video-production software, this first attempt is rather rudimentary and I apologize for all its rough edges. Still, I think it will let you guys see some of the things that I find so charming about this city, France’s fourth largest.
Please take 20 minutes to check it out and let me know what you think. Constructive criticism is always welcome, as is any useful advice.
Thanks for riding with me today!
À bientôt.
Okay, I'll start off. The video is too long, I should have just shot a short video for each leg to make them more bite size. Also, I have to break the habit of shooting vertical for videos. You'll see improvement on these in the future. (Thanks to my friend Paul Sutcliffe for the notes)
Merci, that was fun! I haven’t been on a bicycle for years - i think I did pretty well.
